The 8 Cs of Self-Leadership in IFS

IFS teaches that everyone has a “Self”—the compassionate, wise center of your being. When you’re connected to Self, you naturally lead your inner system with kindness and clarity. The Self is defined by eight qualities, known as the “8 Cs”:

  1. Curiosity: Open to exploring your inner world without judgment.
  2. Calm: Able to bring a sense of peacefulness, even in tough moments.
  3. Clarity: Seeing situations and feelings clearly.
  4. Compassion: Caring deeply about your own and others’ suffering.
  5. Confidence: Trusting yourself to handle challenges.
  6. Courage: Willing to face difficult emotions or memories.
  7. Creativity: Finding new solutions and expressing yourself.
  8. Connectedness: Feeling linked to yourself and others.

When parts take over, these qualities can get buried. But through IFS therapy, you can learn to access your Self, even in stressful times. Next time you’re struggling, pause and ask: “Can I bring curiosity or compassion to this part of me?”

Practicing the 8 Cs helps you lead your inner system and move toward healing.
