Paced Breathing

Paced breathing is a simple technique that can help slow the body’s stress response. By creating a steady breathing rhythm, you can support your nervous system and reduce physical symptoms of anxiety or stress.

Try It Now

Follow This Pattern

Breathe In — 4 Seconds
Hold — 1 Second
Breathe Out — 6 Seconds

Repeat for 1–3 minutes.

Instructions

  1. Sit comfortably with both feet on the floor.
  2. Allow your shoulders to relax.
  3. Breathe in gently through your nose for 4 seconds.
  4. Pause briefly.
  5. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds.
  6. Continue for several cycles.

Why It Works

During stress or anxiety, breathing often becomes faster and shallower. Slowing the breath—especially the exhale—can activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which is associated with recovery and relaxation.

Many people notice reductions in:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Muscle tension
  • Shortness of breath
  • Physical feelings of panic
  • General physiological arousal

Helpful Tips

  • Comfort is more important than perfection.
  • Avoid forcing very deep breaths.
  • If the counts feel difficult, shorten them.
  • Focus on a slow, steady rhythm.
  • Practice when calm so the skill is easier to use during stress.
